Hawkinson Attends IOM

Debbie Hawkinson, Executive Director of the McPherson Chamber of Commerce, recently completed her second year at the Institute for Organization Management, a prestigious four-year professional development program organized by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. Held at Winter IOM in Tucson, this nonprofit leadership training program brought together approximately 260 participants from 38 states and various countries across multiple continents.

Hawkinson’s (2-1) class of 28 participants included representatives from Asia, Iraq, Europe, Morocco, and the United States, who explored shared challenges and opportunities. “The geographic diversity of chambers and associations of all sizes provided valuable perspectives and enriched our discussions,” said Hawkinson.

She was awarded scholarships to support her participation, including one from the Chamber of Commerce Executives of Kansas (CCEKS) and a Regent Scholarship from the U.S. Chamber. The Regent Scholarship, a national honor, recognizes recipients for their active involvement in professional industry organizations, community service, and professional achievements.

“Regent Scholarships provide executives with opportunities to learn about emerging trends, expand their organizations’ reach, and grow their professional networks,” said Raymond P. Towle, IOM, CAE, vice president of the Institute for Organization Management at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. “We are proud to support these talented leaders as they enhance their careers and organizations.”

Hawkinson expressed gratitude for her organization’s support, stating, “I’m thankful to work for the McPherson Chamber of Commerce, an organization who values professional development and encourages my journey with IOM.”

Through a mix of core and elective courses in areas such as leadership, advocacy, marketing, finance, and membership, participants of the Institute gain advanced organizational management skills and innovative strategies to enhance their organizations’ performance and impact.

“This incredible educational experience, along with the professional connections made, equips us to build stronger organizations, better serve our members, and become more effective advocates for the business community,” Hawkinson added.
