Member Spotlight – Good Beginnings Preschool
Sun streamed in through a wall of windows, illuminating the cheerful space as Good Beginnings Preschool hosted the June 27th Chamber Connection from one of their classrooms in the McPherson Church of the Brethren, 200 N. Carrie.
Several people in attendance went through Good Beginnings themselves as well as sending their children to the preschool, which has been licensed by Kansas Department of Health and Environment since 1982.
The school is a private nonprofit that uses the Get Set for School curriculum, a nationally recognized curriculum focused on social/emotional development, kindergarten readiness, and motor skills.
They incorporate multi-sensory hands-on learning, giving children the chance to learn through experience. Good Beginnings’ philosophy focuses on the whole child and developmentally appropriate processes, said board president Sheryl Schrag.
“Children learn through play, so that is just a really big philosophy of ours,” she said. “We allow the children to play…. everything is child-driven and individualized to what the child’s needs are.”
Good Beginnings’ preschool class meets on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 9 to 11:20, and the prekindergarten class meets Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings from 9 to 11:30. Though licensed for a few more, they try to keep class sizes to around 10 for plenty of individualized attention. They still have a few openings for classes starting at the end of August.
