Chamber Encourages Members to Participate in MHS Internships
In an effort to address McPherson’s current qualified workforce need as well as to provide our students with every opportunity to succeed in their future endeavors, the McPherson Chamber of Commerce strongly encourages our membership to take into consideration the following information provided by USD 418.
“USD 418’s C3 initiative has placed a focus on three important areas for student’s future: Citizenship, College and Career readiness. As we continue to improve helping students prepare for a career, we have discovered several ways to helps our students make better career choices.
One way to help our students is to provide opportunities for career exploration. Job shadowing, industry visits and internships are opportunities we would like to develop and expand. Several seniors are currently piloting internships. The goal is for a student with a solid career idea to gain experience in that area in order to confirm, or rule out, that career before enrolling in post-secondary education. Internships also give our students the opportunity to practice good workplace skills.
Students in the internship program spend one class period every day observing and assisting in a career field. MHS students receive credit for this elective class, and are required to keep a log containing a list of assigned tasks, observed careers and reflections on the experience.
This semester we have students participating in internships at a veterinary office, a small business and a school. We hope to expand and provide more students with this valuable opportunity. Stephanie Hamilton, MHS College & Career Advocate, is facilitating the internships placements. Call Stephanie at 620-241-9520 for more information.”
